The Centre for Health Psychology was launched in the year 2007 with her initiative under the leadership of the then Vice Chancellor, Prof. Seyed E. Hasnain. The Centre developed into a prominent academic unit of the University within a span of five years. This is the only unit of Psychology in the country that offers Master\u2019s degree in Health Psychology. Her area of research is Behavioural Cardiology, an upcoming area in the field of Health Psychology.<\/p>\n<h6><strong>Previous Occupations<\/strong><\/h6>\n<p><strong>1992\u20142007: <\/strong><em>Lecturer, Reader, Academic Staff College, University of Hyderabad<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">During this period she was involved in faculty development programmes organized for the lecturers from colleges and universities from all over the country. During these years her perseverance and initiative to bring the discipline of Psychology as an academic unit in the University finally took shape in 2006-07.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1989\u20141992:<\/strong> <em>Specialist (Psychology) State Resource Centre (UNICEF Project) Andhra Mahila Sabha College of Education, Hyderabad<\/em><\/p>\n<p>As a Specialist (Psychology), she was responsible in evolving low cost learning kits for preschool children of Anganwadis.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1986\u20141989:<\/strong> <em>Assistant Research Officer, National Institute of Nutrition, Hyderabad<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Prof. Meena Hariharan worked in a WHO project that came up with a tool for identifying developmental delays\/retardation among children from birth to six years. During this period she also trained several batched of village level workers in administering the psychosocial tool to assess developmental milestones of children in rural areas.<\/p>\n<h6><strong>Institution Building<\/strong><\/h6>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">She played a key role in the establishment of the Centre from conceptualisation to fruition.\u00a0 This entailed a sustained effort from the stage of preparing a blueprint, making the initial proposal to several approvals and clearances at different levels of the University and the Federal Government. The Centre for Health Psychology was launched in the year 2007. From a modest beginning with 13 students in the year 2007 offering one course, the Centre has now grown to more than 100 students pursuing three different courses in Health psychology.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Prof. Hariharan has been in research and teaching since 1983. She is one of the very few Psychologists in India working in the area of Behavioural Cardiology. Her research work reflects Stress and Coping Behaviour, Intensive Care Unit (ICU) Trauma, and Impact of Quality of Communication on Cardiac Patients. Besides this, she has worked extensively on Resilience and Emotional Cognitive Behaviour of Children.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Her attempts to take Psychology to common man includes a number of articles in national as well as vernacular newspapers and magazines. Making use of educational technology, she produced a nine-part audiovisual programme on \u2018Coping with Stress\u2019 which was telecast in a countrywide classroom.<\/p>\n<h6><strong>Research Projects<\/strong><\/h6>\n<p>Completed 25 research projects that received funding from international, national and state agencies.<\/p>\n<h6><strong>Major Research contributions <\/strong><\/h6>\n<p>Among the significant contributions of Prof Meena Hariharan to the field of Health Psychology are:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Development of an intervention module called PACE (Programme for Affective Cognitive Education) for the patients undergoing Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG) which was proved to speed up the pace of convalescence.<\/li>\n<li>Development of a new method of determining the quality of doctor-patient communication by measuring the mutuality of communication.<\/li>\n<li>Standardization of Adolescent Wellbeing scale for Indian population along with Dr.MeeraPadhy. The scale can be used as a diagnostic tool by paediatricians.<\/li>\n<li>Development of Hariharan-Rana synergy model of resilience in association with Dr.Suvashisa Rana. The model is tested through a Resilience Test Battery. This book is widely acknowledged as a definitive contribution combining theory and practice of stress and stress management.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Her second publication is titled \u2018Trauma and Pain management; Biopsychosocial Perspectives an edited volume with two other colleagues, Dr.G.Padmaja and Dr.MeeraPadhy, published by Global Vision (2010). The book has successfully brought the perspectives of medical practitioners, psychologists and practitioners of alternative medicine that advocated the need for shifting from bio-medical to Biopsychosocial approach to health.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">She has worked extensively in the area of Behavioural Cardiology.
